“During working life as a GP I tried to make sick people well, so I thought I would spend my retirement making well people jolly.”
During the autumn of 2012 we planted 800 vines of mostly Seyval grapes, with a few Pinot Noir. The vineyard is just under an acre and due to the limestone base, has particularly well-drained soil. Being south facing it gets sun for more of the day.
In 2015, with the help of friends and neighbours, we picked two and a quarter tons of grapes, enough to produce 3000 bottles of wine. They had thought it was a joke to be planning a vineyard in this inaccessible valley, but after the first tasting party they were laughing with pleasure.
The wine was produced and bottled by The Three Choirs Vineyard in Newent and is now ready to drink. It is crisp, dry and refreshing and at under 12%, it is not too strong. Lately there has been a resurgence of interest in English Sparkling Wine, with produce in Sussex and Cornwall competing favourably with French Champagne.
If you like buying local produce, my wine is ideal for parties, weddings, christenings and any other occasion, or just to drink for fun.
I hope you enjoy drinking my sparkling wine as much as I have enjoyed producing it.
